Gadawan Kura’ – The Hyena Men

South African photographer Pieter Hugo often employs the model of the portrait photograph to speak to the issues surrounding the global reception of and biases toward images of African peoples. In Nigeria from 2005 to 2007 Hugo tagged around with an odd group medicine sales men who perform small shows as part of there sales pitch. They adorn themselves with makeshift costumes made of the remains of western sports wear and more traditional wears. Also notable are the hyenas, baboons and wild dogs captured and used in the performances.
