Storm causes Sinkhole and kills 150 in Guatemalan

The Guatemalan government on Monday posted on its Flickr feed a photo — an actual photo, no editing — showing a wide, gaping sinkhole with no discernible bottom, in arguably the most remarkable image so far after Tropical Storm Agatha swept through the region and killed at least 146 people.

Most of the deaths in the weekend storm occurred in Guatemala. Nine were reported killed in El Salvador, and 14 died in Honduras, Reuters reported.

Here’s another shot of the sinkhole from Guatemala’s official Flickr feed. According to Boing Boing, the sinkhole is in Zone 2 of Guatemala City and measures about 21 yards deep and about 17 yards wide. “A break in the overstressed sewage pipes after the storm was the cause for this one,” writes Xeni Jardin.

Local news source Prensa Libre says no one was injured when the hole broke open.
